The Essentials You Need To Know When Purchasing and Caring For Your Diamond.
Diamond Cut and Shapes

Pear Shaped Diamond

The Pear Shape is amongst the oldest of all diamond cuts, developed in 1458 by Lodewyk van Berquem of Belgium. The modern Pear Shape diamond is a combination of the Round and Marquise Cuts, usually with 58 facets. Often seen in pendants and earrings, the Pear Shape's tear drop outline is also an excellent choice for engagement rings. Pears are usually seen by themselves as a solitaire, or with very simple baguette side stones.

Selecting a Well Cut Pear

Avoid Pears with very thin or very thick girdles. Thin girdles make the stone susceptible to breakage at the tip, while thick girdles can make it hard to set securely. Pear Shape Diamonds, like the Marquise, can exhibit a pattern of darkness in the center that resembles a bow tie. Although this is an optical property of the shape, there are a number of factors in the cutting process that can intensify or diminish its visibility. Our Amberley West retailers and customer service staff can help you select the best stone.

The science of analyzing light performance in diamonds utilizing computer models is in its infancy. To date, no models have been created for the Pear Cut. Until clear standards have been widely adopted it is best to look for a stone that is neither too narrow or too wide and follow the suggested proportions and characteristics below as a guide.
